Setté Cama Forest (Gabon)

Weather…

The Setté Cama Forest is an integral part of the Loango National Park in southwestern Gabon, located on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ndogo Lagoon. This unique geographical location creates an exceptional ecosystem where the dense tropical rainforest directly meets the ocean. The forest is world-famous for the rare phenomenon of 'surfing hippos' that occasionally bathe in the sea, as well as forest elephants that wander along the beach. Vegetation consists of a mix of coastal scrub, mangroves, and primary lowland rainforest, which hosts an enormous variety of bird species. Historically, Setté Cama was an important outpost for the trade of natural rubber and ivory in the late 19th century. Since 1986, the area has been recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance to preserve its valuable wetlands. Today, Setté Cama is a premier destination for specialized ecotourism, particularly for sport fishers and wildlife viewing, with the protection of the fragile coastal flora being a top priority.

🧭
Getting there
Usually reached by boat or domestic flights to nearby coastal settlements, followed by guided transfers. Independent travel to this remote area requires careful advanced planning.
📅
Best season
The dry season is generally preferred for easier access and clearer coastal conditions, although the dense rainforest environment remains remarkably lush and humid throughout the year.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect a challenging combination of sandy coastal stretches and dense, humid rainforest undergrowth. The natural trails can frequently be muddy, uneven, or obstructed by vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy waterproof footwear, lightweight breathable clothing, and strong tropical insect repellent are highly recommended. A reliable dry bag is essential for protecting sensitive equipment.
🅿️
Parking
Organized parking is generally unavailable near this wilderness boundary. Visitors typically leave vehicles in distant towns and rely entirely on specialized transport from local operators.
⚠️
Safety
Traveling with an experienced local guide is strongly advised due to the remote nature of the terrain and the potential presence of free-roaming wildlife in the unmanaged forest.
⏱️
Time needed
Visitors typically spend several days exploring the extended area, as the remote coastal location and complex travel logistics make short day trips completely impractical for most.
