Rembo Nkomi Forest

Water temperature…
The Rembo Nkomi Forest is located in the Ogooué-Maritime province of western Gabon and extends along the river of the same name, which flows into the Fernan Vaz Lagoon. This area is a prime example of a coastal rainforest ecosystem, ranging from mangrove swamps on the riverbanks to dense, evergreen rainforests further inland. The region is characterized by a labyrinth of waterways and seasonally flooded areas that provide good habitat for aquatic mammals such as the African manatee. Historically, the forest was the territory of the Nkomi ethnic group, known for their navigation skills and trade with European merchants in the 19th century. The forest also hosts a significant population of forest elephants, which often come down to the shores of the lagoons. Due to the proximity to oil production areas, the ecosystem is under some pressure, which is why increased efforts are being made to protect the forest through sustainable management and ecotourism projects. The flora is rich in valuable timber species such as okoumé and ebony, with the focus today on preserving genetic diversity.
