Roches Gravées de la Carapa (French Guiana)

Weather…

The Roches Gravées de la Carapa, located near Kourou, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in French Guiana, providing evidence of prehistoric indigenous settlement. The site consists of a cluster of diorite boulders featuring over 200 petroglyphs. These ancient rock carvings depict human figures, animals, and intricate geometric patterns, the exact meanings of which remain a subject of intense scientific study. Archaeologists date these engravings to the pre-Columbian era, likely between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. The site was rediscovered in the late 19th century, but systematic documentation did not occur until much later. To protect the delicate engravings from natural erosion and vandalism, a protective roof and fencing have been installed. The Carapa rocks are regarded as a sacred site by contemporary indigenous communities and offer crucial insights into the ancient cultures of the Amazon basin. Since 1993, the carvings have been officially protected as a national Monument Historique.
