Venelles is a prosperous Provencal town perched on a hill just nine kilometers north of Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhone department. Its history is divided by the Great Earthquake of 1909, which flattened the original village on the hilltop, known as Venelles-le-Haut. This event led to the development of the modern town below, although the ruins and the rebuilt chapel on the hill remain as evocative historical sites. Today, Venelles is known for its high standard of living and beautiful natural setting, surrounded by the pine-covered hills of the Trevaresse range. The town gives spectacular views of the Luberon mountains to the north and the iconic Mont Sainte-Victoire to the east, a landscape that famously inspired the painter Paul Cezanne. Economically, it thrives as a hub for services and small industries, benefiting from its strategic location along the A51 motorway between Marseille and Gap. Venelles is also a cultural hotspot, with a modern theater and a bustling community life that celebrates traditional Provencal festivals throughout the year. With its blend of upscale residential areas, vineyards, and protected woodlands, the town represents the well-suited harmony between modern development and the timeless beauty of the southern French countryside.
