Perched on a 250-meter-high hill just ten kilometers west of Aix-en-Provence, Éguilles commands an expansive view over the Arc river basin and the distant Etoile mountain range. The village retains its authentic provençal layout, defined by narrow, winding streets that lead up to a 17th-century château, which now functions as the local town hall. Exploring the historical center reveals stone facades, traditional washhouses, and sun-drenched squares shaded by old plane trees. Art and nature lovers often visit the garden created by Max Singier, an unexpected contemporary art space filled with sculptures hidden among lush vegetation. Historically, Éguilles was a defensive stronghold, but today it is a residential haven known for its thriving local market held every Friday morning, where farmers from the Bouches-du-Rhône region sell fresh goat cheese, olive oil, and seasonal fruits. Its elevated position ensures a constant gentle breeze, making it a comfortable base for hiking the surrounding hills or cycling through the neighboring vineyards of the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation.
