Donges is strategically located on the right bank of the Loire estuary in the Pays de la Loire region. The city is primarily known worldwide for its monumental oil refinery, which shapes the landscape and stands as a cornerstone of the French energy economy. Despite its strong industrial focus, Donges borders the Grande Brière marshland, one of France's largest wetlands, creating a fascinating contrast between industry and nature. Historically, the settlement was a fishing village for a long time before 20th-century industrialization fundamentally altered its structure. During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed due to its strategic importance and later rebuilt in a modern style. Today, Donges is a vital transportation hub with its own railway station on the Tours, Saint-Nazaire line and plays a key role in the Nantes-Saint-Nazaire port complex, contributing significantly to regional logistics.
