Château-du-Loir is a historic town set in the easy on the eye Loir Valley, located in the southern reaches of the Sarthe department. Its name, meaning 'Castle on the Loir,' refers to a long-lost medieval fortress that once guarded this vital waterway. During the 19th century, the town's destiny was reshaped by the arrival of the railway, turning it into a major transit point between Le Mans and Tours. This connectivity also spurred the growth of local industries, particularly paper mills and leather tanneries, which flourished for generations. Geographically, the town is characterized by its proximity to the Loir river and the nearby Bercé Forest, famous for its ancient oak trees. The area is also celebrated for its viticulture, particularly the prestigious Jasnières white wines grown on the sun-drenched hillsides. Today, Château-du-Loir is the primary urban center of the merged commune of Montval-sur-Loir. It gives visitors a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, including the beautiful Saint-Guingalois church and a lively market atmosphere, making it a low-key spot in the Pays de la Loire region.
