Château d'Azay-le-Rideau (France)

Weather…

The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is considered one of the most well-suited examples of early French Renaissance architecture. Built between 1518 and 1527 on an island in the Indre River, it appears to rise directly from the water, creating famous reflections on its surface. The builder, Gilles Berthelot, a wealthy financier under Francis I, envisioned a structure that harmoniously combines Italian stylistic elements with French traditions, such as corner turrets and steep slate roofs. Particularly noteworthy is the monumental grand staircase, which represented a major shift away from medieval spiral designs. The castle is often referred to as 'the diamond of the Indre,' a term coined by the novelist Honoré de Balzac. Following an extensive restoration in recent years, the facades and lavishly decorated interiors have been returned to their original glory, making it a highlight of the Loire Valley.
