Rocamadour is a sweeping medieval pilgrimage site clinging to a vertical limestone cliff overlooking the Alzou River valley. Since the Middle Ages, it has been one of the most significant holy destinations in Christendom and remains a vital stop on the Way of Saint James. The site is famous for the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame, which houses the revered statue of the Black Madonna, and for the tomb of Saint Amadour. Legend says the incorrupt body of the saint was discovered in a rock niche in 1166. Pilgrims traditionally ascend the 216 steps of the Grand Staircase on their knees to reach the seven sanctuaries built into the rock. Above the religious buildings sits a 14th-century fortress that once protected the site.
