La Couronne is a historically significant town in the Charente department, located just south of Angoulême. The town gained prominence in the Middle Ages with the founding of the Notre-Dame de La Couronne Abbey in the 12th century, whose impressive ruins remain a major landmark today. From the 16th century onwards, La Couronne evolved into a cornerstone of the French papermaking industry, aided by the region's abundant water sources. This industrial legacy continues to define the town, even as its economy has diversified. Today, La Couronne is home to important educational institutions and branches of the University of Poitiers, giving the town a youthful and dynamic energy. The blend of historical heritage, industrial past, and modern academic importance makes La Couronne a central part of the Angoulême urban area. The local landscape is characterized by former limestone quarries and waterways, some of which have been repurposed as recreational spaces.
