Champniers is a widespread commune in the Charente department, sprawling just north of the historically rich city of Angoulême. Set on a gentle elevation, the town provides sweeping views of the characteristic undulating landscape of the Charente countryside, an attractive patchwork of agricultural fields, vineyards, and small woodlands. The architectural pride of the commune is the magnificent 12th-century Romanesque church of Sainte-Eulalie, whose imposing bell tower and intricate stone carvings stand as a fine example of medieval craftsmanship. Champniers is also notable for hosting the local Angoulême-Cognac airport. The town presents a fascinating duality: its western fringe is characterized by bustling, modern commercial zones offering excellent shopping opportunities, whereas the eastern side beautifully preserves its authentic rural charm, featuring quiet hamlets, traditional farms, and the region's signature white limestone buildings. Strolling along the country paths, hikers can observe the distinctive chalky soil that plays a crucial role in the cultivation of grapes for world-famous Cognac. Due to its immediate proximity to Angoulême, renowned as the capital of comic strips, Champniers serves as a wonderfully peaceful basecamp.
