Cognac, a town on the banks of the Charente River in southwestern France, is globally synonymous with the brandy of the same name. The town's history is inextricably linked to the production and trade of this noble spirit, with origins dating back to the 17th century. The major Cognac houses, such as Hennessy, Martell, and Rémy Martin, define the cityscape with their imposing cellars and the characteristic black coating on the walls. Historically, Cognac is also significant as the birthplace of King Francis I of France in 1494, whose castle still stands and can be visited today. The old town, known as Vieux Cognac, enchants visitors with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th century. For centuries, the Charente River served as the primary trade route for transporting barrels to the Atlantic. Today, Cognac is not only an economic center for the spirits industry but also a place of rich cultural heritage set within the gentle hills of the Charente region.
