Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Charente department, Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire is a characterful town deeply rooted in the historical Cognac-producing region. The undisputed landmark is the imposing Château de Barbezieux, a medieval fortress whose monumental 15th-century gatehouse stands proudly above the rooftops. The recently restored castle buildings now house a modern theater and cultural center, creating a unique blend of ancient architecture and spirited community life. Strolling through the narrow streets of the old town, visitors are treated to well-preserved traditional white limestone facades and the beautiful classicist architecture of the Église Saint-Mathias. Situated along one of the historic pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, the town retains a welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding countryside is defined by vast vineyards and bright sunflower fields, providing a tranquil setting for cycling. As part of the designated Cognac appellation, the area provides excellent opportunities to taste fine local brandies and the regional specialty aperitif, Pineau des Charentes, directly from small, independent vineyards.
