Vigneux-sur-Seine is a municipality in the Essonne department, located in the southern suburbs of Paris. Its name reflects its viticultural history, derived from the many vineyards that once covered the local slopes. The city is defined by its strategic position on the right bank of the Seine and its proximity to the Sénart forest. A major feature of Vigneux is the Port-aux-Cerises regional leisure park, a 160-hectare green space created on former sand quarries, now offering lakes, swimming facilities, and wooded paths. Historically, the town evolved from a small fishing and farming village into a modern urban center during the 20th century. Architectural highlights include the 19th-century Port-Courcel Castle, representing the town's historical wealth. Today, Vigneux-sur-Seine is primarily a residential community, highly popular with commuters due to the RER D train line, which provides a direct link to central Paris and the Gare du Nord. Despite its urban growth, it remains one of the leafier suburbs in the region, focusing on preserving its natural waterfront and forest borders.
