Viry-Châtillon is a historic town in the Essonne department, located south of Paris. It holds a unique place in global history as the 'Cradle of Aviation' because it hosted Port-Aviation, the world's first purpose-built airfield, opened in 1909. This tradition of engineering excellence continues today, as the city is home to the high-tech facility where Renault (Alpine) Formula 1 engines are developed and produced. Geographically, the city is defined by its proximity to the Seine and the extensive Lakes of Viry-Châtillon, which span over 120 hectares. These lakes are a major regional attraction for water sports, fishing, and nature walks. The city was formed by the union of Viry-sur-Seine and Châtillon-sur-Seine in 1790. Its architectural heritage includes the Church of Saint-Denis and several old manor houses, contrasted with modern residential developments from the mid-20th century. Viry-Châtillon is a key transportation hub, served by the RER D train and situated along the A6 motorway, making it a convenient residential area for commuters to the capital while maintaining its own industrial and recreational identity.
