Bourg-la-Reine is an affluent and historically significant commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, within the Hauts-de-Seine department. Founded in the 12th century by Queen Adélaïde of Savoy, its name literally translates to 'The Queen's Borough.' The town holds a special place in the history of science as the birthplace of the revolutionary mathematician Évariste Galois, who laid the foundations for group theory. Culturally, it was a major hub for artistic pottery and ceramics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most notably through the work of Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, whose distinctive 'Dalpayrat red' glaze is highly prized by collectors. Today, Bourg-la-Reine is celebrated for its high standard of living, exceptional educational facilities, and lush environment, bordering the grand Parc de Sceaux. It serves as a prime residential area with excellent transport links, primarily via the RER B train line, which connects it swiftly to central Paris and major airports.
