Tergnier is a municipality in the Aisne department, Hauts-de-France, whose identity is deeply rooted in the history of French railways. Rising from a small village in the mid-19th century, it became one of the most critical railway junctions in northern France, hosting vast maintenance depots and marshalling yards. This strategic importance proved double-edged; the town was systematically destroyed during World War I and suffered catastrophic aerial bombardments in 1944. The reconstruction period saw the birth of the 'Cités Cheminotes' (Railway Cities), particularly in the Fargniers district, which was rebuilt with an innovative circular urban plan funded partly by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Geographically, Tergnier is situated in the Oise valley, a crossroads of canals including the Saint-Quentin and Sambre-Oise canals. While heavy industry has declined, the town remains a logistical hub. Its architecture serves as a living museum of early 20th-century social housing and urban planning, attracting historians and urbanists from across Europe.
