Longueau is a French commune in the Hauts-de-France region, inextricably linked to the history of the railway in northern France. Located in the Somme valley, it serves as a vital eastern suburb of Amiens. The town's modern identity took shape in 1846 with the arrival of the Paris-Lille line, which transformed a quiet rural parish into one of France's most important railway hubs. Because of its massive marshalling yards and locomotive depots, Longueau was a prime strategic target during both World Wars, enduring catastrophic aerial bombardments that necessitated complete post-war reconstruction. The town layout today reflects this 20th-century history, characterized by planned residential estates for railway workers and efficient transport infrastructure. While the golden age of steam has passed, Longueau remains a key node for the SNCF and a major player in the Amiens metropolitan economy, balancing its industrial heritage with the development of commercial zones and green spaces along the Somme.
