Courcelles-lès-Lens is situated in a plain that was radically transformed by the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. The city was a key location for the Courrières Mining Company, one of the most powerful mining organizations in France. The development of Pit No. 7 lasting impacted urban growth through the construction of worker housing estates and the arrival of heavy industry. Its position on the Canal de la Deûle allowed for efficient coal transport and encouraged the establishment of further manufacturing plants. Today, the city is part of a large-scale redevelopment program that converts former industrial sites into residential areas and nature zones. The cultural heritage of the miners remains animated through local associations and festivals. Despite economic shifts, Courcelles-lès-Lens maintains its character as a community forged by hard work and solidarity, currently providing modern infrastructure for commuters to the nearby urban centers of Lens and Lille.
