Domrémy-la-Pucelle is a small village in the Vosges department, internationally renowned as the birthplace of Joan of Arc. The French national heroine was born here around 1412 into a peasant family. Her childhood home, a modest stone house, has survived through the centuries and now serves as a museum dedicated to her early life. Nearby stands the Church of Saint-Rémy, where Joan was baptized and where, according to tradition, she first heard the divine voices. The name of the village was officially changed to Domrémy-la-Pucelle in 1578 to honor her title as The Maid. On a hillside overlooking the village, the 19th-century Basilica of Bois-Chenu marks the site where she is said to have experienced her first visions.
