Saint-Claude is tucked away in the Jura Mountains in the department of Jura, at the bottom of a deep valley where the Bienne and Tacon rivers meet. Its origins date back to a 5th-century monastery founded by Saint Romain and Saint Lupicin. Over time, it became a major religious hub, culminating in the construction of the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. The town is globally famous for its specialized industries: it is the world capital of heather-wood (briar) smoking pipes and a historic center for gemstone cutting. These crafts evolved from traditional wood-turning skills practiced by mountain farmers during harsh winters. Today, Saint-Claude is a central part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. It provides an impressive blend of industrial history, religious architecture, and outdoor recreation, with nearby waterfalls like the 'Queue de Cheval' and limestone cliffs attracting thousands of visitors annually.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
