Gex is a strategic town in eastern France, acting as the capital of the Pays de Gex region in the Ain department. Perched at the foot of the Jura Mountains, it provides some of the most spectacular panoramas of the Lake Geneva basin and the Mont Blanc massif. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its border location; it was ceded to France by the Treaty of Lyon in 1601. Throughout the centuries, it maintained its role as a market town for the surrounding agricultural plains and mountain pastures. Today, Gex is a thriving residential hub for cross-border workers employed in Geneva. Despite its modernization, the town retains its mountain character, celebrated through local traditions and the production of the AOC-protected Bleu de Gex cheese. Its proximity to the Col de la Faucille mountain pass makes it a preferred destination for hikers, cyclists, and winter sports enthusiasts seeking natural beauty.
