Nuits-Saint-Georges is an iconic town in the Côte-d'Or department, serving as the historical and commercial heart of the Côte de Nuits wine region. Located midway between Dijon and Beaune, its geography is defined by the Meuzin river and the steep limestone escarpments that produce world-class Pinot Noir. The town's history is remarkably long, beginning with a major Gallo-Roman urban center known as Bolards, which featured a forum, temples, and a theater. In 1892, the town officially appended the name of its most famous vineyard, Les Saint-Georges, to its own. Economically, Nuits-Saint-Georges is a global powerhouse in the wine trade, hosting some of the most prestigious 'Négociant' houses in France. Beyond wine, it is a center for the production of blackcurrant liqueur (Crème de Cassis). Its international fame reached new heights when Apollo 15 astronauts named a lunar crater after it, fulfilling a literary prophecy by Jules Verne. The town center is characterized by beautiful stone architecture, ancient cellars, and a bustling market life.
