Champagnole, often referred to as the Pearl of the Jura, is set directly on the upper course of the Ain river, surrounded by vast coniferous forests and striking limestone plateaus. It developed heavily around the woodworking and furniture industry during the 20th century, utilizing the immense natural resources of the nearby mountains. Today, it serves as a robust basecamp for nature lovers exploring the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. The town itself features the spacious Parc de Belle-Frise, a green lung alongside the river where locals gather for afternoon walks. Looming just to the east is Mount Rivel, an ancient Gallic site that now has hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints over the valley. The town's architecture is largely functional and modern, having been rebuilt after multiple historical fires, but it retains a strong mountain-town atmosphere. Local shops prominently feature regional products, especially the highly prized Comté cheese aged in nearby forts. It bridges the gap between industrial heritage and wild nature.
