Located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, just east of Clermont-Ferrand, Pont-du-Château developed entirely around the banks of the Allier river. For centuries, it was a crucial inland port for the Auvergne region. Flat-bottomed wooden boats known as sapinières departed from here, transporting coal, timber, and local wine downstream all the way to Paris. This rich river-trade history is carefully preserved at the local Museum of River Shipping. The town is visually anchored by the Château de Pont-du-Château, a striking 17th-century castle built on a promontory overlooking the water, which now serves as the town hall. The castle's terraces offer sweeping views stretching out to the dormant volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys. The banks of the Allier river are now recognized as a protected ecological zone, providing an excellent setting for summer canoe trips and birdwatching. Walking through the old mariners' quarter, visitors can admire the restored half-timbered houses that hint at the town's prosperous commercial past.
