Lezoux, located in the Puy-de-Dôme department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is world-renowned for its extraordinary archaeological significance. During the Roman era, particularly from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, it was one of the premier centers for the production of Terra Sigillata pottery in the Roman Empire. The scale of production was immense, with hundreds of kilns and workshops exporting high-quality red-glazed ceramics across the Roman world, from Britain to the Danube. Today, the Departmental Museum of Ceramics serves as a guardian of this legacy, showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts and explaining the sophisticated ancient manufacturing processes. Geographically, Lezoux is positioned in the fertile Limagne plain, east of Clermont-Ferrand. The town retains a scenic medieval center with narrow streets and historic structures like the Saint-Pierre church. Modern Lezoux has successfully transitioned into a dynamic community that balances its rich historical identity with contemporary economic development, aided by its strategic location near major transport routes. It remains a key cultural destination for those interested in the industrial and artistic history of ancient Gaul.
