Spread across the Tarentaise Valley in the Savoie department, La Plagne is a colossal winter sports destination composed of eleven distinct villages, ranging from traditional chalets to towering modernist apartment blocks built in the 1960s. Ranging in altitude from 1,250 to 3,250 meters, it forms half of the massive Paradiski domain, connected to neighboring Les Arcs by the double-decker Vanoise Express cable car. Beyond its hundreds of kilometers of ski runs, La Plagne is unique for hosting France's only artificial bobsleigh and skeleton track, originally built for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. Adventurous visitors can actually ride a bobsleigh down the 1.5-kilometer ice chute. During the summer months, the snow retreats to reveal a sprawling network of mountain biking trails, hiking paths across alpine meadows, and access to the rugged peaks of the Vanoise National Park. The high-altitude villages, such as Plagne Centre and Belle Plagne, serve as bustling hubs of alpine tourism, complete with fondue restaurants and lively après-ski venues.
