💡 Tips
- Avoriaz is car-free. You park your car at the entrance to the resort and take a horse-drawn sleigh or walk to your accommodation. Factor this into your arrival plans.
- For a day off the slopes, the Aquariaz tropical water park is an excellent choice, especially for families. It's located right in the centre of the resort.
- Take advantage of the direct access to the vast Portes du Soleil ski area. A full area lift pass is worthwhile for keen skiers to explore the 600km of pistes.
- Notice the unique, avant-garde architecture. The wood-clad buildings are designed to blend into the cliffside, making them hard to see from a distance.
- Transport within the resort is mainly on foot, on skis, or by horse-drawn sleigh. Book your sleigh in advance, especially on arrival and departure days.
🍽 Food
Enjoy a classic cheese fondue in one of the cozy mountain restaurants. It's the well-suited dish to share after a cold day.
Try this hearty dish of potatoes, Reblochon cheese, bacon, and onions. Look for a restaurant specializing in traditional Savoyard cuisine.
For a quick and delicious snack, you'll find numerous crêperies around the resort offering sweet and savoury options.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The resort is full of high-end ski and snowboard shops. You'll find the latest technology and fashion here.
Look for Savoyard cheese and cured meats in the delicatessen shops to take home a taste of the region.
Most apartments and chalets offer sweeping views across the valley or the slopes. It's the first-rate spot for a quiet morning coffee.
Take one of the higher chairlifts and enjoy a quiet walk along the ridges for spectacular panoramic views away from the main pistes.
Take a walk through the resort before the lifts open. The silence, broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot, is magical.

Avoriaz is a pioneering car-free ski resort located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil domain, sitting on a high shelf at 1,800 meters. Established in the 1960s, it is famous for its avant-garde architecture, where buildings are clad in cedar wood shingles to blend with the surrounding rock formations. In Avoriaz, horse-drawn sleighs replace taxis, and skiers can slide directly from their doorstep to the lifts, creating a unique and tranquil winter wonderland. The resort is part of one of the world's largest ski areas, offering over 600 kilometers of slopes crossing the border between France and Switzerland. Beyond skiing, Avoriaz is home to Aquariaz, a tropical water park with lush vegetation and river pools, providing a warm escape from the alpine cold. The resort also hosts the famous 'Snowboxx' music festival and various extreme sports competitions throughout the winter season. Travelers typically arrive via the Prodains Express cable car from Morzine or by bus from Geneva Airport. While winter is the main draw, the summer season features mountain biking on world-class tracks and golf on a scenic nine-hole course. The local dining scene is diverse, ranging from high-end gourmet restaurants to cozy mountain huts serving pierrade.
