The Arve Valley (Vallée de l'Arve) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is the global epicenter of precision bar turning and machining (décolletage). Located between Geneva and the Mont Blanc massif, this alpine valley transitioned from an 18th-century watchmaking tradition into a specialized industrial hub for automated small-part manufacturing. Today, over 60% of the entire French precision machining industry is concentrated in this valley. Its firms supply high-precision components to critical global sectors, including automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and luxury goods. The valley is home to hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as global leaders like Somfy. The Cluses Technopole (IDEX) ensures constant technological innovation. Despite its industrial success, the valley faces significant environmental challenges due to its topography, which traps air pollution, leading to pioneering local initiatives for cleaner industrial processes.
