Torronsuo National Park (Finland)

Weather…

Torronsuo National Park, located in the Proper Tavastia region of southern Finland, was established in 1990 to protect the deepest raised bog in the country. The peat layers here reach a thickness of up to 12 meters, making the area a valuable archive for post-glacial vegetation history. Spanning approximately 25 square kilometers, the open, treeless mire landscape is renowned for its rich birdlife and rare insect species. Geographically, the bog is a classic ombrotrophic dome, fed solely by rainwater, resulting in an extremely nutrient-poor environment. In the past, quartz was mined here for the glass industry, but today nature conservation is the primary focus. The park serves as a vital resting place for cranes and whooper swans during their spring and autumn migrations. Visitors can traverse the mire on kilometers of wooden boardwalks, which also provide access to the Kiliamo observation tower. The ecosystem is particularly sensitive to climate change, which is why it is used extensively for long-term ecological research.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This deep mire area is relatively easily accessible by car via well-maintained local roads. The actual entrances to the national park are generally clearly and understandably signposted.
📅
Best season
Spring is simply handy for bird watching, while the autumn season makes the mosses shine in exceptionally bright colors. In deep winter, you can often enjoy excellent cross-country skiing.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Since it is officially the deepest mire in Finland, the terrain is extremely swampy. Exploration therefore typically takes place almost exclusively via well-developed, safe wooden duckboards.
🎒
What to bring
As long as you sensibly stay on the duckboards, standard hiking shoes are completely sufficient. However, binoculars are highly advisable for nature lovers to study the rich local birdlife.
🅿️
Parking
At the edge of the expansive mire, there are typically small, designated parking lots for visitors. However, these can quickly become overcrowded on busy weekends during the bird migration.
⚠️
Safety
It is absolutely crucial never to leave the marked boardwalks, as the extremely soft peat soil is unpredictably deep. The wooden paths can also be quite slippery in wet or frosty weather.
⏱️
Time needed
An average walk on the boardwalks across the vast, open mire landscape usually takes two to three hours, gracefully leaving enough time for deeply relaxed observation breaks at the viewing tower.
