Karkkila, also known by its Swedish name Högfors, is a historic industrial city in the Uusimaa region of southern Finland. The city's growth and identity are inextricably linked to the Högfors ironworks, founded in 1820, which established the area as a cornerstone of the Finnish metal industry. The historical factory site along the Karjaanjoki River, with its distinctive red-brick buildings and preserved workers' quarters, is recognized today as a cultural heritage site of national significance. Karkkila became an independent market town in 1932 and was officially granted city status in 1977. Geographically, the area is characterized by rugged, hilly terrain and numerous lakes, with Lake Pyhäjärvi being a central feature for recreation. Despite its heavy industrial roots, Karkkila is surrounded by vast forests and nature trails, blending urban manufacturing history with the tranquility of the Finnish wilderness. Today, the economy continues to revolve around metalworking and machinery production, honoring its long casting heritage.
