St. Michael's Church Kirkkonummi (Finland)

Weather…

St. Michael's Church in Kirkkonummi is one of the most historically significant medieval stone churches in Southern Finland. Its origins date back to the mid-15th century, with the oldest sections of the current structure likely built between 1450 and 1490. Dedicated to Archangel Michael, the church was for centuries the religious and social heart of the Porkkala region. A dramatic chapter in its history occurred during the Soviet lease of the Porkkala area following WWII (1944-1956), when the church was repurposed as a warehouse and a cinema, suffering extensive damage. After the territory was returned to Finland, the church underwent a major restoration in the late 1950s, featuring a new modern interior designed by Olli Kestilä. Today, the building uniquely combines its ancient medieval walls with mid-century modern sacral elements, standing as a powerful symbol of the local community's turbulent history and enduring resilience.
