Dedicated to Archangel Michael, the church was for centuries the religious and social heart of the Porkkala region. A dramatic chapter in its history occurred during the Soviet lease of the Porkkala area following WWII (1944-1956), when the church was repurposed as a warehouse and a cinema, suffering extensive damage. After the territory was returned to Finland, the church underwent a major restoration in the late 1950s, featuring a new modern interior designed by Olli Kestilä. Today, the building uniquely combines its ancient medieval walls with mid-century modern sacral elements, standing as a powerful symbol of the local community's turbulent history and enduring resilience.
