Raasepori Castle Ruins (Finland)

Weather…

Raasepori Castle was founded in 1374 by Bo Jonsson Grip to defend Swedish interests on the coast of the Gulf of Finland against the Hanseatic League. It functioned as the administrative center of Western Uusimaa and was a vital hub for trade and navigation during the Middle Ages. Originally constructed on a rocky island, the ruins now stand about 1.5 kilometers inland due to the continuous post-glacial rebound of the Fennoscandian shield. The castle's strategic importance declined in the 16th century after the founding of Helsinki in 1550 and the gradual silting of its harbor. Following a structural collapse in 1553, the fortress was abandoned and fell into ruin for centuries. Systematic restoration efforts began in the 1890s to preserve its distinctive round towers and curtain walls. Today, it remains one of Finland's most significant medieval monuments, showcasing the military engineering and defensive strategies of the late 14th century.
