Fiskars (Finland)

Weather…

Fiskars Village was founded in 1649 when the Dutchman Peter Thorwöste was granted permission to build an ironworks at the Fiskars River rapids. While the name is globally recognized today for its iconic orange-handled scissors, the village itself has evolved into a unique hub for creativity. The historic ironworks architecture, with its ochre-colored buildings and manicured parks, provides a backdrop for more than 100 artists, designers, and artisans who live and work here. Exhibitions at the 'Copper Smithy' (Kuparipaja) are among the most prestigious design events in Finland. Visitors can browse numerous boutiques for handmade ceramics, jewelry, and furniture directly from the makers. Fiskars is also a pioneer in the Finnish craft food movement; the local brewery, cidery, and distillery use local ingredients for their award-winning products. The surrounding forests offer excellent hiking and one of Finland's premier mountain biking centers (Fiskars Village Trail Center). The Fiskars Wärdshus, Finland's oldest inn in continuous operation, has fine dining and accommodation in a historic setting. Fiskars is an excellent example of how an industrial site can be successfully revitalized into a cultural beacon.
