Puumala is often considered the most beautiful municipality in the Finnish Lake District and is affectionately called the 'Pearl of Saimaa.' The town's landmark is the Puumalansalmi bridge, which spans high above the waterway. An elevator takes pedestrians to the bridge, offering one of Finland's best panoramic views over the lake system. In summer, Puumala harbor is the pulsating heart of the region, filled with markets, restaurants, and numerous sailboats. Puumala is a central point on the Saimaa Archipelago Route, a popular scenic path for cyclists and motorists alike. In the narrow waterways around Puumala, visitors have a good chance of spotting the rare Saimaa ringed seal. The region is also known for its excellent hiking trails, such as the popular Norppapolku (Seal Trail).
