Kolovesi National Park

Kolovesi National Park in southeastern Finland was established in 1990 and is an integral part of the vast Saimaa lake system. Spanning 23 square kilometers, it protects a unique wilderness landscape characterized by steep granite cliffs and narrow waterways. Geologically, the park is a remnant of the last ice age, whose retreat shaped the rugged islands and deep inlets. The rock paintings at Ukonvuori hold significant cultural and historical value, dating back to the Stone Age and proving that the region was inhabited thousands of years ago. Kolovesi is one of the most vital habitats for the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal, which finds sanctuary in the park's tranquil waters. To protect this sensitive wildlife, motorboats are banned in most of the park, making it a premier destination for canoeing. The vegetation consists of pristine boreal forests where rare moss and lichen species thrive. Hikers can explore short but steep trails that lead to spectacular vantage points overlooking the expansive lake district.
