Loviisa is a pleasant coastal city in the Uusimaa region of southern Finland, located about 90 kilometers east of Helsinki. Founded in 1745 as a frontier fortress against Russia, it was later named in honor of Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden. The city is celebrated for its exceptionally well-preserved historical district, featuring colorful wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries that escaped the great fire of 1855. Just off the coast lies the Svartholm Sea Fortress, a significant military complex from the Swedish era that is now a popular summer destination. In modern times, Loviisa is widely recognized as the site of Finland's first nuclear power plant, which has been a pillar of the nation's energy production since the 1970s. Every August, the city hosts the 'Loviisa Historical Houses' event, where residents open their private gardens and historic homes to the public. The maritime spirit of Loviisa is best experienced at the Laivasilta harbor, where traditional red salt warehouses have been converted into cozy restaurants and local craft shops.
