Keuruu Old Church
Keuruu Old Church is one of the most magnificent examples of 18th-century Finnish wooden architecture. It was constructed between 1756 and 1759 under the leadership of the famous master builder Antti Hakola. Designed as a wooden cruciform church, it represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship from that era, with its massive timber structures stabilized through traditional joinery. The church gained worldwide renown primarily for its extraordinary interior paintings, created between 1782 and 1785 by Johan Tilén. These Baroque murals on wood depict various biblical scenes and are unique in Finland for their level of detail and preservation of color. Since the completion of the new stone church nearby in 1892, the Old Church has served as a museum church and is open to the public during the summer months. It provides visitors with an authentic glimpse into the religious life and folk art of provincial Finland as it existed over two hundred years ago.
