Ähtäri is located in the Southern Ostrobothnia region and stands as one of Finland's premier family destinations. The Ähtäri Zoo, established in 1973, is home to over 60 animal species, including the famous giant pandas Lumi and Pyry, as well as native Nordic animals like brown bears, wolves, and lynx in spacious, natural enclosures. The town is surrounded by Lake Ähtärinjärvi, providing visitors with excellent opportunities for fishing, rowing, and kayaking. For hikers, there are well-marked trails through ancient coniferous forests, such as the Kierinniemi nature trail. Architecturally, the Hotel Mesikämmen is a highlight, designed by the architects of Helsinki's famous Rock Church and partially built into the granite bedrock. The town is easily accessible by train, with its own stop at the zoo, or by car via Highway 18.
