Karttula Church (Finland)

Weather…

The current Karttula Church, situated in the Northern Savonia region, is a significant landmark of Finnish ecclesiastical architecture from the interwar period. Following the total destruction of the previous 1873 wooden church by fire in August 1920, architect Bertel Liljequist was commissioned to design the new building, which was consecrated in 1930. The architectural style blends Nordic Classicism with early functionalist influences, characterized by clean lines and a simple yet dignified facade. Built of brick and finished with plaster, the church presents a solid and enduring appearance compared to the region's earlier timber structures. The interior accommodates approximately 700 people and features an altarpiece depicting the Resurrection of Christ, painted by artist Juho Rissanen in 1930. The church's excellent acoustics make it a popular venue for concerts and cultural events within the municipality of Kuopio. Today, the building is protected as a historical site, representing the determination and reconstruction efforts of the local community after the devastating fire of the 1920s.
