Gode is a strategically significant town in the Somali Region of Ethiopia, situated along the banks of the Shebelle River in the Shabelle Zone. Located at an elevation of only about 300 meters, it experiences an extremely hot and arid climate typical of the Horn of Africa lowlands. The town was uniquely designed in the 1960s with a modern urban plan and features a strategic airport that played a major role during the Ogaden War. Gode served as the administrative capital of the Somali Region for several years before the regional government moved to Jijiga. The Shebelle River acts as a lifeline for the town, allowing for some irrigation-based agriculture in an otherwise harsh desert environment. The population is almost entirely Somali, and their culture and nomadic traditions heavily influence the local markets and social life. During times of regional drought, Gode often becomes a critical logistics hub for international humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting pastoralist communities.
