Pourrières is a historic hilltop village in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is most famous in history books as the site of the Battle of Aquae Sextiae in 102 BC, where the Roman Consul Gaius Marius decisively defeated the Teutonic tribes, a victory that saved Rome from invasion. Geographically, the village is set in a memorable landscape between the Sainte-Victoire mountain range and the Mont Aurélien. This location provides a unique microclimate that is exceptionally favorable for viticulture; consequently, Pourrières is one of the top producers of AOC Côtes de Provence wines. The village architecture features traditional Provençal elements, such as sun-drenched squares, ancient fountains, and stone houses with terracotta roofs. Economically, while agriculture remains dominant, the village has become a sought-after residential area due to its scenic beauty and proximity to the urban centers of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. It serves as a well-suited base for hikers and art lovers attracted by the landscapes that inspired Impressionist painters.
