Liiva-Nukk (Estonia)

Weather…

Liiva-Nukk, whose name refers to the sandy nature of the area, is a coastal feature in the northern part of the Tagamõisa Peninsula. Unlike many rocky sections of Saaremaa island, this location features significant sand deposits shaped by sea currents and winds. Geologically, the cape sits atop a limestone threshold, which is, however, obscured by marine sediments. In the past, this point served as a landmark for small fishing boats navigating between the islands of the Vilsandi archipelago. The flora consists mainly of marram grass and other pioneer plants that stabilize the dune structures. The area is now part of a bird sanctuary, as the shallow sandbars provide convenient conditions for wading birds. The constant movement of material by the waves ensures that the shape of Liiva-Nukk changes discernibly over the decades.
