Purtse Manor (Estonia)

Weather…

Purtse Manor, also known as Purtse Castle, is a unique fortified manor house located in Ida-Viru County, dating back to the 16th century. Built between 1533 and 1565 by Jakob von Taube, it serves as a rare example of a transition between a late Gothic fortress and a Renaissance residence. The building's architecture is defined by its thick stone walls, reaching up to 2.3 meters, which were designed to provide defense during the frequent conflicts of the Livonian War. Throughout its turbulent history, the castle was repeatedly damaged by fires and wars, including the Great Northern War, leading to its eventual abandonment and ruin. A significant restoration project was undertaken between 1987 and 1990, bringing the structure back to its former glory. Today, Purtse Castle is a popular cultural venue, hosting exhibitions and concerts while showcasing the region's resilient architectural heritage.
