Kohtla-Järve Chemical Park

The Kohtla-Järve Chemical Park is the hub of the Estonian oil shale industry and a major industrial complex in the northeastern part of the country. The processing of oil shale (kukersite) began here as early as 1924 with the establishment of the first thermal retorting plant. Today, the park is primarily operated by Viru Keemia Grupp (VKG), utilizing advanced technologies for the efficient and responsible exploitation of this national resource. Beyond shale oil production, the facility generates valuable chemical by-products such as phenols and resins, which are exported worldwide for use in the cosmetics and construction sectors. The industrial park is the most critical employer in the Ida-Viru region, supporting thousands of jobs in mining and refining.
