Kuremägi (Estonia)

Weather…

Kuremägi is a 92-meter-high hill in Ida-Viru County in northeastern Estonia. It is widely known as the home of the Pühtitsa Convent, the only operational Russian Orthodox nunnery in Estonia, established in 1891. Geologically, Kuremägi is a terminal moraine formed during the last ice age, standing out significantly from the surrounding flat plains. The site was considered sacred by native Estonians long before the arrival of Christianity, evidenced by a 'sacred oak' tree over 600 years old that still stands on its slope. The hill hosts six churches and an extensive monastic complex that attracts thousands of pilgrims annually. A notable feature is the holy spring at the foot of the hill, whose water is attributed with healing properties. The vegetation consists of ancient mixed deciduous forests, which provide a sharp contrast to the nearby bogs and industrial landscapes of the Ida-Virumaa region.
