Trenches of Nakfa (Eritrea)

Weather…

The trenches of Nakfa are a monumental testament to the Eritrean struggle for independence and symbolize the people's determination against Ethiopian occupation. Nakfa served as the strategic headquarters for the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) and was the scene of fierce fighting for years. The defense system consists of hundreds of kilometers of trenches, tunnels, and underground bunkers carved into the rugged mountains to provide protection from airstrikes and artillery fire. Within these underground cities were hospitals, workshops, printing presses, and schools that sustained daily life during the decades-long war. The capture of Nakfa by the EPLF in 1977 was a decisive turning point in the conflict. Today, the city is a national shrine and gave its name to Eritrea's national currency. A visit to the trenches provides deep insights into the military innovation and extraordinary spirit of sacrifice that led to the country's independence in 1991.
