Established in 1979, the city was named to commemorate the starting date of the 1973 October War. It was one of the first planned urban communities in Egypt designed to provide housing and employment opportunities outside the congested Nile Valley. Today, the city stands as a massive industrial powerhouse, featuring twelve industrial zones that host numerous multinational corporations in the automotive and food processing sectors. A defining landmark is the 'Media Production City,' Egypt's largest media hub, housing numerous television stations and film studios. Additionally, the city is a major center for higher education, containing a high density of private universities and medical research centers. Despite its industrial foundations, 6th of October City gives modern residential districts, expansive parks, and major retail destinations like the Mall of Arabia.
