Valle Nuevo National Park (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Valle Nuevo National Park, officially the Juan Bautista Pérez Rancier National Park, is a high-altitude plateau located in the heart of the Cordillera Central and is considered one of the most critical ecological assets of the Dominican Republic. With an average elevation exceeding 2,200 meters, the park features a temperate alpine climate that is rare in the Caribbean, where winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing, sometimes producing frost. Valle Nuevo is famously nicknamed the 'Mother of the Waters' because it contains the headwaters of the island's most important river systems, which are essential for national agriculture and hydroelectricity. The terrain is characterized by expansive forests of endemic Hispaniolan pines (Pinus occidentalis) and unique high-altitude shrublands found nowhere else on Earth. At the park's center stands a massive stone pyramid monument, often cited as the geographic center of the island. For hikers and eco-tourists, it provides dramatic vistas and the chance to spot rare wildlife, such as the Hispaniolan Trogon and Crossbill. Due to its biodiversity and hydrologic importance, the park is subject to strict environmental protections to safeguard the nation's water supply.
