Saona Island is a wide-open tropical island located off the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic. As part of the protected Cotubanamá National Park, it is the most popular excursion destination in the country. People travel here to experience its expansive, untouched beaches of powdery white sand, swaying palm trees, and clear turquoise waters. Since large-scale construction is prohibited, the island maintains a raw, unspoiled natural charm. The island's rich ecosystem is a massive draw. Surrounding Saona are expansive sandbars forming natural pools in the ocean, famously inhabited by indigenous red starfish. Visitors can wade in waist-deep water to observe these creatures. The island also features dense mangrove forests and serves as a vital nesting ground for sea turtles. Lunch is typically served as traditional beachside buffets, featuring fresh fish and local staples. Getting to Saona Island is an adventure in itself, usually involving a scenic catamaran or thrilling speedboat ride departing from the coastal village of Bayahibe. The trip takes about 45 minutes. While the island is a phenomenal destination year-round, the best sea conditions are generally found between December and May.
